Clinical Observation of Acute drug Intoxication


Abstract
The clinical observation was made of 150 patients with acute drug intoxication who admitted to the department of Internal Medicine and department of pediatrics, Pucheon Daesung Hospital during the period from August, 1988 to July, 1990. We observed and analyzed relating problems concerned to the intoxication,
The results were as follow
1. The sex incidence was 1 male to 1 : 1.41- female with a preponderance of female. Over one. half of the accident group were first decade and 48.9% of the suicide group were third decade.
2. The seasonal incidence was highest in Spring and the next was Winter.
3. The most common drug of the intoxicated drugs was therapeutic drugs and in the rest of cases, the drugs were agricultural chemicals, rodenticides and others.
4. The motive of intoxication was suicidal attempt 87.3% and accident 12.7%.
5. While accident group arrived at hospital mainly at daytime suicide attempted group arrived at night.
6. The most common symptom was impairment of consciousness occupying 38.7%. And nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain were frequently observed.
7. One half of case was admitted for 2 days and the mean period of admission was 3.2 days.
8. The fatality rate was 5.3% in accident group and 2.3% in suicide attempted group.
